Borders is a different kind of Earth than the one we’re familiar with. In this Earth, ever since humanity became sentient, it has had to compete with, work together with, and war with two other sentient species: dragons, an older but simpler species; and the fay, a younger but much more complicated species. In a world like this, the middle child might not always be the one who comes out on top, for all we certainly try.



Species

Dragonkind: Large, largely carnivorous creatures with six limbs, two of which are wings, and a resistance to magic. They are known for their long life and how thoroughly they have intertwined their species with humanity in modern times.

Humanity: By far the most numerous, adaptable, and physically hardy, humans develop technology to master the world rather than trying to change it to suit their wishes.

Fay: The youngest of the species, though not by more than a few thousand years, fay developed from another, later branch of the human family tree. They have smaller numbers than even the dragons, but they live so long that one or two claim to even remember their species' beginning, or at least to have known someone who did! Of the three species, only the fay have innate magic.

Mixed Breeds: Humans have the unique ability to be able to have children with both of the other intelligent species on earth-- though requiring a lot of magical help, in the process, on the part of dragons. The offspring of fay and humans, in particular, have abilities than the human parent does not, with most of the benefits of being fully human, as well. The offspring of a human and a dragon aren't usually quite so lucky.
