Magic

Magic in its purest form is practiced by the fay species and those humans with fay blood who manifest as mages, but all kinds of magic-- instinctive and fixed, the magic of the psychic or the werewolf-- fall into the same basic categories, and all use the same energy particle, shina escala, or "magic together" in the fay tongue, who first named it. This particle can infuse and affect other particle types, and it is speculated that it actually inhabits another plane, allowing it to share physical space with matter and energy of less esoteric types.

The internationally recognized divisions of magic, standardized between the fay and human governments of North America in 1956, are under the cut.

The offspring of humans and fay, humans and dragons, and sometimes a little of all three, have a wide range of abilities. The most common of them are listed here. Perhaps a fifth of the modern human race in Europe and Asia, an eighth of Africa, and upwards of a quarter of people in the Americas have some level of fay blood, even if it's just a great-great grandparent, and even that small drop might be enough for some small talent. It is much more rare to have more than fifty percent fay blood, as only in extreme cases are mixed blooded individuals allowed back into fay society.

Mixed Breeds. )

Humanity is familiar, with all it's quirks of health and psychology. The only difference in this world from our own is how humanity has been forced to grow in tandem with dragonkind and the fay. While minds and bodies are the same, technology and history and culture have some significant differences.

Humans. )

Not long after the evolutionary appearance of humanity, in terms of epochs, the first branch of the fay peoples developed. Perhaps the two diverged within a few thousand years of each other, and it is generally assumed that homo sapiens magica became its own species no more than ten thousand years after the first homo sapiens sapiens, and from a different branch altogether. At the same time a younger people and an older people, due to their long lifespans, the fay are also proud, and tell themselves often that they are the proper evolutionary trend, because they are the last-- the correction of nature's mistake.

Fay )
bordersmods: (mods-misty)
While tetrapods take their very name from their four limbs and the state persists in every bird, fish, and frog, a certain branch of the dinosaur family tree deviated from this reliable plan, creating the warm-blooded, winged, and eventually sentient family dragonis: six limbed, six-digit creatures more commonly called dragons.

Do you have what it takes to tackle the wild lands, face down feral dragons and negotiate with loner magicians? Interested in seeing what the world looks like with a little less civilization, or just looking for someplace new to make your own? Look no further than Peridexion, a newly build city just waiting for YOU!

Borders is an alternate universe fantasy game for original characters, where the world can be rather different from what we know today. Dragons and fay have always been a presence in this universe, from the days of the dinosaur when dragons branched off and started gaining intelligence, and then when the fay species branched away from the early human populations. There has never been any hiding, but there has been quite a bit of interspecies conflict, mediation, and intermingling.

In the middle of the United States and Canada is a swath of mountains, plains, and forests that were never won over by civilization, a bastion for dragons that don’t like the idea of citizenship, fay who withdraw from the influence of humans, and those of humanity who find the cities stifling and want a more raw kind of life. They are generally just called the “wild lands”, and every generation or so one country or the other, or sometimes both, makes a new attempt to colonize and domesticate the wilderness, always repelled by those already living there or by the untamed nature of the land itself.

The early twenty-first century is the time for the latest attempt, whether for families wanting to start off fresh on the frontier, adventurers wanting a new challenge, or the more mysterious scientists, magical researchers, and engineers called specifically for the task of investigating this only halfway-discovered land. Whoever you are, the United States government is offering spaces on their transports to the newest town in the wild lands: Peridexion.

1.) No god-moding, which is writing the reactions or effects of other characters. And no no power-playing; your character is not all-powerful and cannot withstand or dodge every attack. If you get into a fight, be willing to take some damage from it!

2.) In character actions = in character consequences. If your character starts shooting people in a public street, he is going to get arrested and spend time in jail, unless he gets rescued-- and even then, he is now a wanted man and the Peridexion police force will be looking for him! If your character is a jerk to everyone she meets, she is not likely to make many friends.

3.) No badmouthing other players, and no creating OOC drama. We're all adults, and we're all here to write, not bicker. If you have a problem with someone OOC and cannot resolve it between the two of you, bring it to the mods. We're all reasonable people (or we should be!), and communication is key for staying that way.

4.) Borders runs on a 1 week : 2 weeks schedule, so that 2 weeks passes in real time to every 1 week of game time. An events post will go up the Saturday before a week change with anything of interest in the town, area, or plot that needs addressing.

5.) There is a character limit in this game. Right now, that limit is that a player may begin the game with two (2) characters when it opens, and may eventually bring in up to six (6) total, one per application period. This may be adjusted, depending on how people keep up or don't keep up, in the future. When bringing in a new character, all current characters must have passed the previous month’s activity check. Applications open once a month, from the 1st to the 7th.

6.) Activity checks occur once a month, during the last seven days of the month, and can be comprised of anything within the time frame of that month. All characters are required to have five (5) comments made by them in at least one (1) but no more than two (2) IC threads. Threads of just smut with no other content will not count towards activity. If one of your characters fails activity for the month, they will be given a strike which they can then work off by passing the next two activity checks. Until that strike is removed, a player cannot app any more characters. A character failing activity while under a strike will be removed from the game.

7.) All scenes with mature content (sex, abuse, or extreme violence) must be locked to the community and posted behind a cut tag with warnings for the type of content.

Human Naming Conventions
Human names in Borders run along similar lines to those in modern Earth today: a first or personal name, a middle name that is rarely referenced, and a last or family name inherited from the parents, whether father, mother, or hyphenated from both. It is slightly more accepted for a man to take a woman's last name if they agree they'd prefer to, than in our Earth, and hyphenated names for children are also slightly more common, but on the whole it's fairly similar. Some populations have taken fay- or dragon-sounding names into common trends, particularly in the parts of the United States where both are fairly integrated.

Fay Naming Conventions
Similar to humans, fay have three names, but their meanings are different: they have a first or personal name, a second or family name usually inherited from the parent they most closely resemble species-wise but sometimes this varies, and a third or clan name that is based on either species bloodline or home village. Most of their names are derived from words in their own language, though some few deign to adopt human names, if they resemble fay names or have special meaning to them. Those few fay who marry a human never take their name.

Examples of fay names:
Alona Deseri Silfani
Chaysin Oralifa Escafala
Deslani Toramin Silforim
Esfamir Yehinar Rescim
Halamon Catamen Tayfir
Kyaval Erifen Atayma
Mioslen Ineyen Yasilfen
Norana Arinve Escen
Ruvena Ayala Silfiter
Tayvin Sheri Tayfen
Uintali Deshit Mescafa

Dragon Naming Conventions
When paired with a human in modern American society, a dragon will be given a name on hatching, whether by his or her parents or new partner. If the former, it will often be a hereditary name or a name that is made by combining the parent's names, and while it might not resemble any particular language, it is usually a "strong" name, one with lots of hard consonants. Once partnered, a dragon must take on a partner's last name to show that he or she is connected to a human. In the wild, dragons rarely take more than one name, as the only other important definition for them is their flock, and that can be determined more by smell than by nomenclature. Also, wild-born dragons might have names that are much harder for humans to pronounce, full of clicks, growls, and hisses.

Examples of dragon names:
Aterre Guzman
Issrid
Harkit Rivera
Kaki Brown
Navvka
Ok'kmetre
Rekka
Ssashirik
Ttami
Xsarita
