The Major Places

The Wild Lands
Also known as the wild country, the hinterlands, and the free territories, this unclaimed and unregulated stretch of land runs from the western edge of the Rocky Mountains, about where modern day Utah begins, to the western edge of Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota in width. It runs north and south from central Utah to the middle of modern day Idaho. Unpartnered dragons, unaligned fay, and many unallied native tribes fill the open spaces, fighting particularly strongly for the farmland territory on the eastern side of the Rockies. There are towns here and there, even one unallied city-state on the plains and another deep in the mountains, but leadership is fluid and often completely absent, and the general law of the land is to protect your own interests and those of your closest friends and kin, and otherwise it is every man, fay, or dragon for himself.

It’s worthwhile to remember that what are “The Wild Lands” to the settlers is simply home to its inhabitants, who are likely to have quite a different perspective on the situation.

Peridexion
This is a small settlement a little over three hundred miles southwest from Ochina Yehen, the biggest and most organized city in the wild lands. It’ll take a long time for Peridexion to reach that level. It has only been built in the past year, the United States’ government’s latest attempt at expanding into what it views as unclaimed land, and is even more recently being settled by civilians. Most gameplay will take place or at least originate here.

The town is large enough to hold 50,000 people, but the first waves are coming in the hundreds rather than the thousands, making it appear like something of a ghost town to those newcomers. It is laid out like most cities in the US, with a central circle for mixed commerce and human and fay housing, a ring of larger buildings for dragon-focused commerce and housing, and then a ring of farmland and ranches for feeding dragons. The only difference is that beyond that ring is a high wall and several layers of protective spells, to keep the locals and wild animals out. Beyond the wall to the east lie open plains and farmland, while to the west are mountains, and to the north and south, forests.

Most of the city is up to modern technological standards, with computers and concrete roads for cars, but alongside those technological standards are less advanced options: for example, a dirt track beside every road for horses, the magical mirror system for communication, and a small library of actual books. It has a somewhat rustic feel to it in its design elements. Local merchants are currently few, but some small shops and restaurants are opening with the first wave of settlers.

Ochina Yehen (derived from the Fay for Place of Freedom)
This is the largest city in the wild lands, and usually the first one newly arrived-- or newly lost-- individuals find when wandering in from the east. It's situated in the plains of modern day western Nebraska and controls all the surrounding area, and it obviously grew from a small settlement into a large, patchwork kind of a city. The fay presence is strongest here in all the wild lands, and there is a fay-dominated government, with a small council and a Lord, whose position is hereditary. Laws, however, are few and far between, and the only real law that cannot be argued out of or made an exception for is "keep the peace". Fighting and murder is not tolerated for any reason. On the whole, the city is much like the origin of its name: it is a place where freedom is valued above anything else.

The Minor Places

Town Hall
Located centrally for ease of tracking down, the town hall is a fay-safe and dragon-friendly building where grievances can be brought before the mayor, registration of various kinds take place, and the old-fashioned bulletin board resides for general announcements that don’t get made in person or via mailed notices-- or even in addition to those methods. Other residents can leave notices, as well, requesting roommates, offering jobs or services, or posting about social events. A dozen or so people work here doing paperwork to help keep the city running.

Sheriff’s Station
In the same parking lot as the town hall is the sheriff’s station. Most of the actual work of keeping the peace and patrolling the city and surrounds is taken up by the military stationed at Peridexion, but a few civilian officers work here, generally handling smaller disturbances like drunkenness or shoplifting, and manning the six-cell jail. The sheriff herself is appointed by the government branch overseeing the city development.

Peridexion Library
Down the block from the town hall and sheriff is the public library. It’s mostly human-sized, but with a singular shelf of dragon-sized books in the back that only a very small dragon could actually get to. There is a “rare books” room in an underground chamber, and a magically protected “magical books” room off that one. These rooms are open to the public but only by appointment.

Interfaith Chapel
The building is somewhat Spartan with all the decorative sense and comfort of an airport lounge, but it functions. The basement contains several small rooms and the first floor can have anywhere from two to six depending on which rolling walls are retracted. Space is readily accessible to anyone with a religious function in mind, even if it’s just a church-affiliated pancake breakfast. A kitchen, a small nursery, and a few small offices are tucked into corners.

The Knolls
This is the first housing development open to the settlers, consisting of six city blocks and able to house about 500 families. All houses in this development are single-storied and have between 2 and 4 bedrooms with 1 or 2 bathrooms and a garage big enough for 1 car. Each lot is large enough to sport a small garden plot and a stable large enough for two horses, though not all plots actually have these ready-built. The houses in this development have a slightly rustic look to it, with a lot of wood and brick in evidence, and while all houses have modern amenities (plumbing, electricity, and climate control) there are alternative methods of each (hand pumps for water, gas lanterns, and fireplaces). One city block closest to the main road is set aside for fay residents, with no technological amenities or materials used in the buildings’ construction, and fixtures for magical appliances per most modern fay standards in addition to the alternative methods.

School
Currently, there is only one school in operation in Peridexion, in the central section of the city nearest the Knolls, though there is a second one currently closed on the other side of the city. It is very big, built more on the lines of a college campus, with sections for the all grades from a small preschool building and day care, to a fully functional high school. All buildings are built with dragons and fay in mind, and all three species will in fact have to attend the same classes. Students do have the option of taking courses at home, but must still take regular progress tests administered by the school staff, and the parents must be able to show that the children will be supervised.

Barracks
The military barracks are situated in the second ring, where all the buildings can accommodate dragons of all sizes, due to each division except the magical one having at least one dragon pairing as a member. Dragons share commons, with small rooms off the main chamber for their partners, and the unpartnered human and fay components of the station also share traditional barracks, twenty to a room. Only officers and those partnered with a dragon have their own rooms. There is a gym, a practice ring for dragons, and a rec room, as well as a cafeteria, but dragons are expected to get their dinners from the ranches beyond the barracks rather than keeping their own herd.

Dragon Hatchery
This building is still under construction, and once completed will only have room for five nests at a time even then. It is built in a hexagonal shape, with the sixth side set aside for classrooms. There is no housing available in the building, as everyone applying for a hatchling will have housing already in the city, within a comfortable distance. There is currently one egg in residence, with two months left before its expected hatching date, and applications are open for its partner.

Restaurants and Shops: Central Circle

Dark Heart: A bar owned by Santiani Asensa Basilfi. It has two floors: one above ground that is possible to accommodate dragons in, should any deign to frequent a fay’s establishment, and one below ground for more intensive dancing and the occasional trysting, which is more more human-sized. The theme is somewhat dark and while the first story is rustic to match the rest of the city, the underground level is positively gothic in theme.

The Lion’s Mane: A clothing store specializing in all-weather clothing, leather, and exotic fur. It also sells some simple wilderness survival items, like swiss army knives, pup tents, and climbing rope.

YMCA: Yes, the YMCA exists in this universe, and one has set up shop in Peridexion. It is mostly set up as a cross between gym, sports center, and source of cheap food at their cafeteria, and is one of the few places already established for young people to hang out after school or work. The local one has even set up one room for non-sports games, with a television, a couple older model game stations, and foosball.
